25 May 2010 - some notes for chemistry !! ( term 4 )

guys ,, here are some tables that you must remember for your chem test tom .. ( in case you're stuck in front of your computer u can study from here :P )

Acids
-Form a class of chemical substance which contain hydrogen ion, H+, in aqueos solution.

Properties of Acids:
  • Acids turn blue litmus red.
  • Acids are ELECTROLYTES because it contains hydrogen ions which conducts electricity.
  • Most dilute acids (EXCEPT NITRIC ACID) react with most metals (EXCEPT Cu, Ag, Au) to from salt and hydrogen gas.
  • Acids react with METAL OXIDE to form salt and water.
  • Acids react with METAL HYDROXIDE to form salt and water.
  • Acids react with CARBONATES to form salt, water and carbon dioxide
 Alkali
Properties of alkali:
  • Alkalis turn red litmus blue.
  • Alkalis have a bitter taste.
  • Alkalis give a soapy feeling.
  • Alkalis when warmed with AMMONIUM SALT, produce AMMONIA, SALT and WATER.
  • Acid + Alkali ------> Salt + Water (neutralization)
 ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
 Types of Oxide:

1. Acidic oxides
-Non- metal oxides reacting with H2O to form acid.
e.g CO2,SO2,P4O10.

2. Neutral oxides
- Non-metal oxides ( single oxides )
e.g. H2O, CO, NO.

3. Basic oxides
-Metal oxides react with water to form an alkali.
e.g. Na2O, CaO, Fe2O3.

4. Amphoteric oxides
-Metal oxides which can react with an alkali or acid in order to form salt and water.
e.g. ZnO, PbO, Al2O3.
